pipas, tabacos, humos y vapores / E-Cigarette CE6

pipas, tabacos, humos y vapores / "La Gran Obra", "Liqua"

Folks, this concoction pays fine tribute to the wonders of Latakia used sparingly, in harmony with other leaves. Unlike the above reviewer, I found this blend demure in its leathery presentation. The tin aroma is somewhat balkan in its pungency, rather more sour than sweet. I am not usually a burley fan, but I found it kept a low profile here, content to allow the virginias to sing tenor while the dark leaf played a humble basso profundo. I detect some sort of casing here, albeit slight. This tabak is blended in Germany for McLintock and Germans cannot seem to leave a blend uncased. That said, it is not offensive. The mixture requires a good airing prior to enjoyment and did not seem to prefer any particular size of bowl. The above may seem to indicate that this was a rather "ho-hum" affair, but it is not so. Having worked through a tin in short order lead to purchasing several more as I am delighted with its complexity and ease on my palate. If ever a dark blend could be referred to as "refreshing", my money is on this treasure. 12/28/04--had placed the contents of 5 tins into a jar and let sit since may. Am currently enjoying now. Go find some.

Patrick from Blatter and Blatter recommended this blend when I mentioned my liking for Latakia. A rectangular tin with a pipe rest molded in the lid, quite attractive. As I opened it, an exotic smokey aroma hit my nostrils, reminiscent of a middle-eastern desert camp fire.

The cut is very fine and easy to load in any pipe, but such a fine cut leads to the tobacco drying out faster

No troubles lighting and burned with minimal if not any relights. The blend also contains Virgina and Burley, a combination complimenting the main star: Latakia.

After smoking several tins of the blend over the years, I no longer enjoy it. I detect a topping of some sort, which can be distracting. I can see how some would enjoy it, but I personally find that it lacks complexity and depth.

Finally, a true great Continental Europe English blend! It's made in Germany, but it doesn't resemble the classic production of that land, though I could detect a slight casing. Upon opening the (very nice) tin, you find the tobacco into a plastic bag, which helps keeping the moisture at a fine level. The cut is a medium ribbon which together with the moisture level makes packing and lighting an easy task. The big flavour starts to develop from the very first match, with the great latakia always in great evidence, while the Virginia provides the medium body and a little sweetness; the burley rounds it all with its nutty flavour. As far as burning goes, well, it's a marvel: easy, even, cool, it leaves just fine, white ash at the bottom of the bowl. Highly recommended.

I bought six pouches of this blend with the only purpose to get an idea on what Syrian Latakia, the now vanished weed, is. Well, now I have learnt it's milder and weaker than the Cyprian variety but it's aroma is slightly more complex, it reminds rather of incenses than of campfire and gives more pleasant room note.

To be honest I don't feel I'm loosing too much because of the scarcity and unavailability of Syrian Latakia on the market. Nothing special in it, and I won't search for more.

The blend is sort of weird. It looks and smells like an English blend but actually it isn't one. Burley-front base, cased in some typical German casing-juices, topped with an uncommon sort of Latakia all make a blend that has just a superficial similarity to an English/Balkan mix. It's a mix in its own right and I'd rather classify it within continental semi-aromatics sprinkled with exotic spice tobaccos.

Totally smokable, not offensive, very mild (actually, too mild , in my opinion) Must try if you want an introduction into Syrian Latakia. Other than that me personally see little interest in this particular blend.

Syrian Latakia . The unlit mix has a supreme smokey aroma emanating from the Latakia . It is of a brilliant moistness too , so once filled it takes to the flame very easily . The flavour of this is a total delight , you get the Virginia "hay" note with an amazing smokiness from the Latakia . If you are the type of smoker who has a predilection to inhale the smoke then this will suit you as it is a very soft and silky smoke with a great nicotine content (about Squadron Leader level) . As this burns on the smokey flavour does not dissipate any at all , staying prodigious for the whole pipe . Room note is very "classic" and takes you back to the 1800's ! This is going straight into my favorites .... superb !

What sets this blend apart from so many other Latakia mixtures is the fact that Syrian Latakia is used, and this is very different to the more common Cypres variety. For one thing, the nicotine content of Syrian is much higher than Cyprian and this shows in the kick this fine blend delivers! The taste is different too, being less leathery/smoky and more aromatic for that matter. I recently bought for tins of this blend and those tins were just flat, no pipe indent in the lid. I feel this is an excellent Latakia mixture that is subtly sweet, smokey and just wholly delicious!

I love this stuff. Volumes of smoky rich taste. As a cigar smoker I have been wondering if I could find the same bliss with a pipe. I have tried many four star blends and this is my favorite so far....But I can't find any! Anyone know where it is sold or if it has a different name in bulk?

pipas, tabacos, humos y vapores / Carter Hall-Tabaco

40 years ago I tried this blend and hated it. I wasn't ready for burley blends. Except for my occasional SWRA forays, my reluctance for smoking OTCs since then was hard to break. Recently, I decided to try it again. It's a bit nutty, with a mild chocolate, and a little molasses, along with a light bourbon topping. The toppings do weaken a tad toward the finish, and the natural tobacco flavors become more obvious. The nic-hit is mild. It burns cool and evenly, doesn't need to be relit much, packs very easily, with a very pleasant after taste. Leaves just a little moisture in the bowl. It goes well with any drink you choose. Some people kind of look askance at the thought of smoking an OTC. Don't expect more from it than it's meant to be, and you will enjoy it. There are more expensive burley blends and some of them are better than this, but for the price and convenience and taste, it's worth being in your rotation if you like burleys.

Mild   Mild   Medium   Tolerable
My 90 year old pipesmoking mentor smokes this blend exclusively. He will accept tins of the high-dollar tobacco that I sometimes bring him, and smoke them, but a few months later when I stop by for a visit, there's a can of Carter Hall sitting beside his easy chair, open and ready for the next fill of the pipe.

My friend is a pipesmoker like the old men I remember from my youth. He gets his pipes from Wal Mart and smokes them till they "wear out," and then buys some more. No fancy tobacco jars, no special packing technique, just a dip, a push of the thumb and light 'er up, tamp once and relax.

And so I like this blend. Not only because my pipesmoking friend smokes it, but I like the way CH packs, lights, burns steady and without too much fuss. I inhale occasionally and the draw feels good. This blend is just steady and unpretentious, like my friend, and I know I'll always have a tub of this on hand. Whenever I leave after a visit, the old pipesmoker says, "Load up a bowl before you go." That's the way I think of Carter Hall, easy-going and always ready with a kind offer of a good smoke.

Mild to Medium   Mild to Medium   Mild to Medium   Pleasant to Tolerable
This is an affordable gem. Carter Hall has a slighty nutty, faintly sweet taste that stays consistent throughout the bowl. There is nothing complex about this tobacco, which is a good thing. Sometimes simple is good. A bowl of CH in a cob is one of life's simple treasures.

Mild to Medium   None Detected   Mild   Pleasant to Tolerable
Let me start off by saying that when I first started smoking a pipe when I was 18 I tried to get things that 'smelled good'. You know the stuff, cherries, vanilla, etc. Later, I found my way to more tobacco-tasting tobaccos and by the time I was 19 I was working in the local tobacconist/pipeshop and dismissed the 'drugstore' blends from which I had graduated as cheap stuff, not worthy of my pipes.

Well, I'm older now and I hope that I am more mature. I am willing to confess my errors. Coming back to the pipe after 20 years of cigarettes, I just couldn't find my way back to an English type, tobacco tasting, all day, every day kinda smoke. Then I read the reviews here for Carter Hall. My smoking life has changed and I have learned something in the process.

Carter Hall is not fancy. It is about as 'plain-Jane' as you can get. It is just burley with a sprinkling of virginia flake. It is monochromatic; doesn't change much as you smoke it. But it burns to the bottom of the bowl without too much fuss and it burns to a fine white ash with no bits of charcoal left in the bottom of the pipe. It provides enough nicotine for this one to kick the cigs. And, while not an aromatic, no one seems to run away screaming because of the malodorous fumes emanating from the general direction of my smoldering Peterson. By itself, this is a good quality 'baccy' and its simplicity and straightforwardness are to be appreciated as such.

It is, as has been mentioned, probably the best pipeweed for breaking in a new pipe. Even smoking 1/2 pipes full initially, I have always had a difficult time caking up the bottom of the bowl. Not with Carter Hall. A good 4-6 smokes at half full and you are on your way to a nice cake down there.

Because of its rather neutral character, it is wonderful for taming down a blend that just isn't right, somehow. The addition of a little CH doesn't change the tast much and tones down strong flavors and bitey-ness. It is also great for working the ghosts of other blends out of your pipes.

Having said that this blend is great on its own, and it is, I have also experiemted using it as a base for some blending. Because of its nice easy, gentle burning qualities, it proves a good base for other things so as to give me a bit of variety. Variety is necessary in some things. (You don't eat the same thing for dinner every night do you?)

I can't say enough good things about this tobacco. If you haven't tried it, you should. It's plain and simple, true. But, there is value in the plain and simple. Give it a go.

I am often asked if I have a favorite "Drug Store" type blend. I always answer quickly that "yes, I do and it's Carter Hall." In fact, Carter Hall is a blend I smoke at least twice a day and is a wonderful tobacco to smoke late in the evening before calling it quits. Carter Hall is probably the most impressive of all the "drug store" blends I have tried because it tastes like tobacco without fruity casing, and has some strength to it. The Burley is top-shelf and provides a no-nonsense tobacco taste.

This tobacco is bite free and I doubt that even Thomas the Tank Engine could puff this stuff up into the hot zone. It also has some kind of component that makes the ash adhere to the walls of your pipe, thus, aids the caking process in new pipes.

This is an excellent blend. Nothing to compare with Cellini's stuff which I don't like. The tuscany wine is an invention, however the Da Vinci by Dan is simply a great smoke. If you like aromatics such as Blue Note, Sweet vanilla, Autumn Evening, WO Larsen Vintage etc. (all of them first class aromatics, to me) you simply cannot miss the Da Vinci. After many tins, I always find myself amazed by how good the aroma and smell of this blend is. It is well balanced, and it deserves 5 stars with no reserve. Aromatics are like cakes: there's not a "best" one, however you should know the best of all kind, and refuse second choice blends. This is first quality, and it is a bit expensive unfortunately.

Extremely Mild   Strong   Extremely Mild (Flat)   Unnoticeable

Being a friend of the Aromatics, I had ordered this blend from Dan Pipe together with a few others on the strength of previous reviews. So far, Dan Tobacco had not let me down. Unfortunately, however, they did so this time around.

The tobacco comes in nice, wide ribbons, with VA and Black Cavendish being foremost. I bought a pouch, and the aroma after breaking the seal was absolutely delicious. So I stuffed a pipe and let the adventure begin.

Not much of an adventure there, though. The much-advertised wine is noticeable and gives the smoke a nice, dry note. Right after lighting, it seems overwhelming for a few puffs, then gives way to a winey, dry taste and aroma. The 'baccy burns down gently and nicely as delivered.

The bad news is that I'm not certain that I was smoking tobacco. It could have been flavoured hay or maybe coloured paper. There is almost no taste (except for that nice winey note), and the room aroma vanishes almost before it develops. The entire thing absolutely lacks any punch; at times I felt like I was sucking hot air instead of tobacco smoke.

It's mild. It's mellow. If you crave that in an Aromatic, go for it. Me, I'm decidedly underwhelmed and won't buy this blend again.

Mild   Strong   Mild to Medium   Very Pleasant

One of the few aromatics that you can actually taste. Whether the taste is wine or not is debatable but the pouch smell is superb and the smoke flavor on the tongue pairs nicely. Indeed everyone nearby appreciates the smell, but even so, the one with the pipe gets the true experience. Very unique blend and flavor worth trying at least once to see how you like it.
